Trump takes credit for cutting regulations that were actually non-existent

Trump claimed today that he cut a hole bunch of federal regulations that were in fact cut by Barack Obama. According to Bloomberg:

The claim of victory in the war on regulation is instead based almost entirely on stopping proposed rules that haven’t yet made their way through the machinery of government. The White House says it has killed or stalled 860 pending regulations. It’s done this by withdrawing 469, listing another 109 as inactive and relegating 282 to “long term.”

A Bloomberg News review has found even those claims are exaggerated. Hundreds of the pending regulations had been effectively shelved before Trump took office. Others listed as withdrawn are actually still being developed by federal agencies. Still more were moot because the actions sought in a pending rule were already in effect.

DAY 322: Trump lies about Black homeownership and the economy

Donald Trump lied in a Rally in Florida about Black homeownership hitting a record high under his administration. AP fact checked him:

In his Alabama-ish rally, President Donald Trump falsely stated that black homeownership has hit a record high under his stewardship and made the dubious claim that he set Canada’s prime minister straight on the state of trade between the two countries.

...

THE FACTS: Not true or even close.

The U.S. Census finds that the black homeownership rate peaked during 2004, when 49.7 percent of black households owned homes (the rate for all races that year reached 69.2 percent, also a modern record). The black homeownership rate stayed in similar territory until the recession, when it dropped to the mid-40s.

This year: 42.7 percent in the first quarter, 42.3 percent in the second and 42 percent in the third. That’s an uptick from last year but far from a record. Quarterly rates this year for the total U.S. population: 63.6 percent, 63.7 percent and 63.9 percent.

Michael Flynn pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI about his contacts with Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak. According to The New York Times, this is part of the Robert Mueller investigation and it refers to a conversation Flynn had with the Russian ambassador before Trump took office. That is the same conversation he lied about to Mike Pence:

President Trump’s former national security adviser, Michael T. Flynn, pleaded guilty on Friday to lying to the F.B.I. about conversations with the Russian ambassador last December, becoming the first senior White House official to cut a cooperation deal in the special counsel’s wide-ranging inquiry into election interference.

Mr. Flynn’s discussions with Sergey I. Kislyak, the Russian ambassador, were part of a coordinated effort by Mr. Trump’s aides to create foreign policy before they were in power, documents released as part of Mr. Flynn’s plea agreement show. Their efforts undermined the existing policy of President Barack Obama and flouted a warning from a senior Obama administration official to stop meddling in foreign affairs before the inauguration.

Donald Trump has been bitching and moaning about not getting a "thank you" from one of the parents of the American basketball players who were jailed in China for shoplifting. Because foreigners who commit small crimes in China are deported rather than jailed:

experts say the players for the U.C.L.A. team, who were accused of stealing sunglasses from a Louis Vuitton store in Hangzhou, China, probably would have been released even if Mr. Trump had not raised the case with President Xi Jinping during a visit this month to Beijing.

Just before the stroke of midnight on September 20, 2016, at the height of last year’s presidential election, the Wikileaks Twitter account sent a private direct message to Donald Trump Jr., the Republican nominee’s oldest son and campaign surrogate. “A PAC run anti-Trump site putintrump.org is about to launch,” Wikileaks wrote. “The PAC is a recycled pro-Iraq war PAC. DAY 291: Papadopoulos presented himself to UK as representative of Trump campaign

Donald Trump and the White House have tried to characteize George Papadopoulos as a low level, unpaid volunteer who had very little to do with the Trump campaign. Photos and comments by Donald Trump himself show that's a lie by the Trump camp. But now UK officials are revealing Papadopoulos presented himself to the UK government as a representative of the Trump campaign.

"As you would expect in the run up to an election we seek to build links with figures in both the Democratic and Republican presidential campaigns," a Foreign and Commonwealth Office spokeswoman told the BBC, confirming the meeting. "This type of outreach is normal diplomatic business."

While such meetings may be routine diplomacy, the fact that Papadopoulos was presenting himself to the government of one of the US's closest allies as a representative of the Trump campaign undercuts the White House's recent assertion that Papadopoulos was a campaign volunteer of little importance.

Shortly after the trip, Mr. Page sent an email to at least one Trump campaign aide describing insights he had after conversations with government officials, legislators and business executives during his time in Moscow, according to one person familiar with the contents of the message. The email was read aloud during the closed-door testimony.

A federal court blocked Donald Trump's ban on transgender people in the military.

According to AP:

A federal judge on Monday barred President Donald Trump’s administration from proceeding with plans to exclude transgender people from military service.

U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly ruled that the transgender service members who had sued over Trump’s policy were likely to win their lawsuit. She directed a return to the situation that existed before Trump announced his new policy this summer, saying the administration had provided no solid evidence for why a ban should be implemented.

DAY 279: Russian lawyer who met with Trump Jr. used Kremlin information

Even though Russian lawyer Natalia Vaselnitskaya denied working with the Kremlin when she met with Donald Trump Jr and Jared Kushener, new evidence reveals she used Kremlin information and even copied it verbatim. According to The New York Times:

...interviews and records show that in the months before the meeting, Ms. Veselnitskaya had discussed the allegations with one of Russia’s most powerful officials, the prosecutor general, Yuri Y. Chaika. And the memo she brought with her closely followed a document that Mr. Chaika’s office had given to an American congressman two months earlier, incorporating some paragraphs verbatim.

...

It also suggests that emails from an intermediary to the younger Mr. Trump promising that Ms. Veselnitskaya would arrive with information from Russian prosecutors were rooted at least partly in fact — not mere “puffery,” as the president’s son later said.

Donald Trump promised he would not gain from his proposed tax plan. But that's false. The New York Times fact-checked Trump's claim and he will definitely benefit from his proposed tax plan. From the NYT:

The Republican framework would eliminate the “death tax,” which applies to estates valued over $5.49 million in 2017. Mr. Trump has an estimated net worth of $3.5 billion. He might not personally see a tax break from the repeal, Mr. Williams said, because “he’ll be dead. But his heirs will.”

The new plan also would repeal the alternative minimum tax, a parallel system of taxation that currently ensures that those who take deductions and try to exploit loopholes pay a minimum amount; it largely impacts people making between $200,000 and $1 million. Without this tax, Mr. Trump would have paid $31 million less in taxes in 2005, according to his tax return that year, which was disclosed on the “Rachel Maddow Show” in March.

Trump's recent stupid comments and Trumpcare are meant to increase his poll numbers, not as actual policy

Donald Trump has been on a streak of stupid, prejudiced comments on foreign issues and he has been on an effort to pass another version of Trump care that's even worse than the one that already failed in the Senate.

As it turns out, the whole thing is a mere ploy to try to boost his approval numbers among the most racists in his followers. Which is most of his followers.

How do we know that? Because Trump is actually paying for ads on Facebook aimed at the worst of the worst of his followers, trying to sell them the idea that he will build a border wall, when in fact he won't, as he does not have the numbers in Congress to approve the money to built it.

Trump stupidity: Blocks cancer patient and invents the country of "Nambia"

Lots of Trump stupidity today. First, he read a speech in front of foreign leaders in which he mentioned the country of "Nambia", which does not exist. According to The Wall Street Journal:

An overlooked vowel by the U.S. leader resulted in him praising the progress of “Nambia,” a country that some observers were quick to point out didn’t exist in Africa—or anywhere else.

An official White House transcript of Mr. Trump’s remarks was more forgiving, crediting him with referring to the actual country of Namibia, whose president, Hage Geingob, and deputy prime minister, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, were said by the White House to be among those present.

Right... So Trump can't read now?

But then Trump did something truly stupid: He blocked from his Twitter account a cancer patient who refuted this new Trumpcare plan.

Trump made it more difficult for highly skilled foreigners to get work visa, and tourism sunk

Two news stories that should show just how damaging Donald Trump is for the US economy. First, he made it more difficult for highly skilled foreigners to get work visas. According to Reuters:

The Trump administration is making it more difficult for skilled foreigners to work in the United States, challenging visa applications more often than at nearly any point in the Obama era, according to data reviewed by Reuters.

The more intense scrutiny of the applications for H-1B visas comes after President Donald Trump called for changes to the visa program so that it benefits the highest-paid workers, though he has not enacted any such reforms.

Data provided by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services shows that between Jan. 1 and Aug. 31, the agency issued 85,000 challenges, or “requests for evidence” (RFEs), to H-1B visa petitions - a 45 percent increase over the same period last year. The total number of H-1B petitions rose by less than 3 percent in the same period.

Which means tech companies can't get the highly skilled labor they need to grow the American economy.

DAY 241: Steve Miller suppressed report showing refugees contribute more in taxes than they cost the US

According to The New York Times, Donald Trump's advisor Steve Miller suppressed a report by the Department of Health and Human Services showing that refugees actually contribute more to the US in taxes than what they cost to taxpayers.

The net difference between the cost of refugees to the US and what they contribute to the US in taxes is 63 billion dollars more in taxes than what the refugees receive from public funds.

But Steve Miller, according to the NYT, suppressed the fiscal benefit from the report and only allowed one figure to be shown: the cost of about $1,000 more than the average American in taxpayer dollars.

DAY 238: Trump's "fraud" commission has been using private email; Experts say it violates federal law

Remember how Donald Trump has been bitching about Hillary Clinton's private email server? Well, turns out his "electoral fraud" commission -which is a farse in itself- has been using private email to communicate. Problem is, they are suppose to be dealing with the private information of millions of American voters.

According to ProPublica:

President Donald Trump’s voter fraud commission came under fire earlier this month when a lawsuit and media reports revealed that the commissioners were using private emails to conduct public business. Commission co-chair Kris Kobach confirmed this week that most of them continue to do so.

Experts say the commission’s email practices do not appear to comport with federal law. “The statute here is clear,” said Jason Baron, a lawyer at Drinker Biddle and former director of litigation at the National Archives and Records Administration.
