Desperate because of low approval ratings, Trump backs off on Dreaners and makes phony Cuba policy

According to an AP poll released today, Donald Trump's approval sunk to 35% and his disapproval is at 64%.

That could be the reason why Trump pulled two publicity stunts today. One to try to improve his approval among liberals and one to improve his approval among conservatives.

First, he backed off on trying to get Dreamers deported... for now. In other words, Barack Obama's policy of amnesty for Dreamers still stands.

However, that is NOT something Trump should be applauded for. He did get a few Dreamers and other law-abiding, productive immigrants
deported in the previous months. It is Barack Obama who should be applauded for his policy in favor or Dreamers.

How do we know this is just a publicity stunt? Because the backing off is just for now. There is no guarantee that Trump won't deport them in the long term. Thus, the backing off is only for the sake of approval ratings.

After that, Trump made a spectacle of the signing of a memo reversing Obama's policy of normalizing relations towards Cuba.

According to The New York Times:

President Trump announced on Friday that he was reversing crucial pieces of the Obama-era policy of engagement with Cuba, arguing that he was revoking elements of a “terrible and misguided deal” by reinstating travel and commercial restrictions in a bid to force concessions from the Castro government.

During a speech at a theater in Little Havana, the epicenter of the Cuban exile community in Miami that supported him in last year’s election, Mr. Trump said he was keeping a campaign promise to roll back the détente begun by his predecessor, which he said had empowered the communist government in Cuba and enriched the military, intensifying its repression of citizens of the island nation.

The move, however, is phony. Because it turns out the American embassy in Cuba will stay open; Travel to Cuba will not be restricted, Cuban immigrants will not be prevented from sending money to Cuba, and the policy of accepting Cuban immigrants if they reach dry land in America, that was ended by Barack Obama, will not be reinstated.

In other words, Trump is merely pretending to have a hard line on Cuba.

By the way; the Obama policy of opening relations with Cuba was supported by most Americans. Only hard-line conservatives, who are a minority, opposed it. This means Trump is trying to increase his poll numbers with conservatives.

"But wait, how can you be sure this is about boosting poll numbers?" some may be asking. Well, because Trump also tweeted this:

Which is false. Gallup and AP show Trump's approvale sunk to 35% to 36%, and his disapproval is up to 64%.

So this is not about real policy. This is about Trump trying to boost his poll numbers. Why? Because Trump knows that if most Americans don't back him up, it will be easier for the Republicans to agree to impeaching him.

UPDATE: Oh, and by the way: Trump violated the Cuban embargo in 1998.

UPDATE2: According to fivethirtyeight.com, Turns out Trump is not at 50% approval. He cherry picked the poll that tends to favor him, which, in turn, also has a trend downwards in its approval rating.
