Does anybody really believe that a reporter, who nobody ever heard of, "went to his mailbox" and found my tax returns? @NBCNews FAKE NEWS!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) March 15, 2017
Fake, huh? Well, there's one problem with that. Trump's tax returns say "CLIENT COPY", which means either Trump, his accountant, or somebody within the Trump organization leaked them.
As Newsweek journalist Kurt Eichenwald pointed out correctly today:
Fox News saying Obama allies leaked Trump tax return.

..and they were so clever, they stamped "Client Copy" on it? Gee, who's the client?
As per the reporter who got the tax returns, he said this:
Gee, Donald, your White House confirmed my story. POTUS fake Tweet. Sad! https://t.co/ibK2ApKI9E

Why would Trump leak a 2005 return that only shows he lied about his net worth (and without any information regarding the sources of his income)? Well, if he actually was the source of the leak, maybe it means he wanted to change the subject away from his bullshit accusations of wiretapping. That topic has been dogging him for a while now, and nothing short of a full admission that he was lying will make it go away.
Because indeed, the issue just won't go away. And of course it won't go away. Trump made a false accusation against Barack Obama of committing a federal crime, something that could have serious legal consequences. And now he doesn't know how to get out of it.
And even Republicans are not happy about it. Today, for example, they threatened with subpoenas on the issue. If they do issue subpoenas against Trump, he will either have to admit he lied, or he will lie to Congress, in which case he could be impeached.
