Trump describes Puerto Rico as "an island surrounded by water"

This is probably one of the dumbest things Donald Trump has ever said in office. This is how Trump described Puerto Rico after days of being devastated by hurricane Maria and being ignored by Trump's government: "an island surrounded by... water. Big water. Ocean water."

DAY 251: Tom Price resigns because of private jet scandal; Trump says he's a "good man"

Donald Trump's secretary of health and human services Tom Price resigned today because of the scandal he created by spending $400,000 dollars in public money using a private jet.

According to The New York Times:

Already in trouble with Mr. Trump for months of unsuccessful efforts to repeal and replace President Barack Obama’s health care program, Mr. Price failed to defuse the president’s anger over his high-priced travel by agreeing to pay a portion of the cost and expressing “regret” for his actions.

“I’m not happy, O.K.?” Mr. Trump told reporters as he was about to head to his New Jersey golf club for the weekend, barely an hour before the resignation was announced. “I can tell you, I’m not happy.” He called Mr. Price “a very good man” but added that the secretary’s offer to reimburse the government for just part of the cost of the flights “would be unacceptable.”

Wait, wait.... what? Price offered to pay just a portion of the money he spent?

DAY 250: Trump lied; He will gain from his proposed tax plan and his supporters won't

Donald Trump promised he would not gain from his proposed tax plan. But that's false. The New York Times fact-checked Trump's claim and he will definitely benefit from his proposed tax plan. From the NYT:

The Republican framework would eliminate the “death tax,” which applies to estates valued over $5.49 million in 2017. Mr. Trump has an estimated net worth of $3.5 billion. He might not personally see a tax break from the repeal, Mr. Williams said, because “he’ll be dead. But his heirs will.”

The new plan also would repeal the alternative minimum tax, a parallel system of taxation that currently ensures that those who take deductions and try to exploit loopholes pay a minimum amount; it largely impacts people making between $200,000 and $1 million. Without this tax, Mr. Trump would have paid $31 million less in taxes in 2005, according to his tax return that year, which was disclosed on the “Rachel Maddow Show” in March.

DAY 249: Trump's tax plan raises taxes for poor and lowers them for the rich

The tax plan unveilled today by Donald Trump increases taxes for the poor, changes nothing for the middle class, and lowers taxes for the rich.

According to The New York Times, the tax plan eliminates the 7 current income brackets and establishes 3 brackets with the following income tax rates:

Lowest bracket: 12% income tax.
Middle bracket: 25% income tax.
Top bracket: 35% income tax.

The problem is that means the poor will pay 20% more taxes; part of the middle class will pay 25% more taxes, and the rich will pay nearly 13% LESS taxes.

Jared Kushner used private email for White House business

According to Politico, Donald Trump's son in-law and close adviser at the White House used private email to conduct official White House business. From the Politico article:

Presidential son-in-law and senior adviser Jared Kushner has corresponded with other administration officials about White House matters through a private email account set up during the transition last December, part of a larger pattern of Trump administration aides using personal email accounts for government business.

Kushner uses his private account alongside his official White House email account, sometimes trading emails with senior White House officials, outside advisers and others about media coverage, event planning and other subjects, according to four people familiar with the correspondence. POLITICO has seen and verified about two dozen emails.

Trump's recent stupid comments and Trumpcare are meant to increase his poll numbers, not as actual policy

Donald Trump has been on a streak of stupid, prejudiced comments on foreign issues and he has been on an effort to pass another version of Trump care that's even worse than the one that already failed in the Senate.

As it turns out, the whole thing is a mere ploy to try to boost his approval numbers among the most racists in his followers. Which is most of his followers.

How do we know that? Because Trump is actually paying for ads on Facebook aimed at the worst of the worst of his followers, trying to sell them the idea that he will build a border wall, when in fact he won't, as he does not have the numbers in Congress to approve the money to built it.

Trump stupidity: Blocks cancer patient and invents the country of "Nambia"

Lots of Trump stupidity today. First, he read a speech in front of foreign leaders in which he mentioned the country of "Nambia", which does not exist. According to The Wall Street Journal:

An overlooked vowel by the U.S. leader resulted in him praising the progress of “Nambia,” a country that some observers were quick to point out didn’t exist in Africa—or anywhere else.

An official White House transcript of Mr. Trump’s remarks was more forgiving, crediting him with referring to the actual country of Namibia, whose president, Hage Geingob, and deputy prime minister, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, were said by the White House to be among those present.

Right... So Trump can't read now?

But then Trump did something truly stupid: He blocked from his Twitter account a cancer patient who refuted this new Trumpcare plan.

Trump made it more difficult for highly skilled foreigners to get work visa, and tourism sunk

Two news stories that should show just how damaging Donald Trump is for the US economy. First, he made it more difficult for highly skilled foreigners to get work visas. According to Reuters:

The Trump administration is making it more difficult for skilled foreigners to work in the United States, challenging visa applications more often than at nearly any point in the Obama era, according to data reviewed by Reuters.

The more intense scrutiny of the applications for H-1B visas comes after President Donald Trump called for changes to the visa program so that it benefits the highest-paid workers, though he has not enacted any such reforms.

Data provided by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services shows that between Jan. 1 and Aug. 31, the agency issued 85,000 challenges, or “requests for evidence” (RFEs), to H-1B visa petitions - a 45 percent increase over the same period last year. The total number of H-1B petitions rose by less than 3 percent in the same period.

Which means tech companies can't get the highly skilled labor they need to grow the American economy.

Problem is, they are suppose to be dealing with the private information of millions of American voters.

Experts say the commission’s email practices do not appear to comport with federal law. “The statute here is clear,” said Jason Baron, a lawyer at Drinker Biddle and former director of litigation at the National Archives and Records Administration.
