According to The New York Times, Trump Jr. said about the meeting:
“To the extent they had information concerning the fitness, character or qualifications of a presidential candidate, I believed that I should at least hear them out. Depending on what, if any, information they had, I could then consult with counsel to make an informed decision as to whether to give it further consideration.”
Notice the second part of his statement: "Depending on what, if any, information they hadu, I could then consult with counsel."
That basically means Trump Jr. knew the meeting was potentially illegal, as it is a federal crime for a campaign to get anything of value -in this case information for a political campaign- from foreigners.
And yet Trump Jr. went to the meeting anyway.
So now Trump Jr's only way to weasel himself out of this one is to claim no information of value was obtained from the meeting. Because if he were to admit that he did get information of value, he would be admitting to a federal offense.
