Trump Jr. knew because he was informed in an email the meeting with the Russian lawyer was part of an effort by the Russian government to aid Trump. But Trump Jr. went ahead with the meeting anyway.
From the NYT article:
The email to the younger Mr. Trump was sent by Rob Goldstone, a publicist and former British tabloid reporter who helped broker the June 2016 meeting. In a statement on Sunday, Mr. Trump acknowledged that he was interested in receiving damaging information about Mrs. Clinton, but gave no indication that he thought the lawyer might have been a Kremlin proxy.
Mr. Goldstone’s message, as described to The New York Times by the three people, indicates that the Russian government was the source of the potentially damaging information. It does not elaborate on the wider effort by Moscow to help the Trump campaign. There is no evidence to suggest that the promised damaging information was related to Russian government computer hacking that led to the release of thousands of Democratic National Committee emails.
What's really interesting about this is the fact that Donald Trump didn't say a word about this issue today, when he traditionally goes into a Twitter rambling whenever damaging facts are published about his alleged collusion with Russia. This time he simply said nothing on the issue and tried to change the subject to some unverified nonsense on Fox News:
Fox News tweets, citing a report, that Comey shared classified info
— Steve Kopack (@SteveKopack) 10 de julio de 2017
Moments later, Trump tweets that "Comey leaked CLASSIFIED INFORMATION" pic.twitter.com/BEVs8kRoY3
Which suggests Trump knows just how damaging this issue could be and how close the Independent Counsel might be from finding Trump did collude with Russia in 2016.
