Trump repeats false Pershing story in response to terrorist attack in Spain

After islamic terrorists killed 13 people and injured several more in Barcelona, Spain, by ramming a van into a crowd, Donald Trump responded with this tweet:

Trump is referring to a lie he said during a campaign rally in 2016: that Pershing used bullets dipped in pig bloog to execute 49 islamic terrorist and left 1 go to tell people the story, thus preventing 35 years of islamic terrorism.

That lie has been debunked several times. But here's some more information about it:

First of all, Pershing himself never recorded such an incident even in his own memoir, in which he wrote about another commanding officer in the Philippines who buried the body of an islamic terrorist in the same grave as a dead pig.

Second, consider the following: Blood coagulates. Blood-dipped bullets would jam a rifle. Any seasoned military person, as Pershing was, would know this. There's no way Pershing would've done something that would jam the rifles

Finally, CNN points out the following:

Moreover, the idea that all Muslims believe that if they are shot with pigs' blood they would be sent to hell, the foundation of the supposed tactic, is incorrect. Islam forbids its followers from consuming pork, but "there is no penalty for coming into contact with pork given by the Quran," Shannon Dunn, an assistant professor of religious studies at Gonzaga University, told HuffPost.

So the story is a lie, the basic idea behind the story is a lie, and Trump simply repeated prejudiced, ignorant nonsense.
