In other words, Trump knows he has become toxic to anyone near him.
Well, anyone but nazis.
The thing is, some of people who would be honored had already cancelled their attendance to the Kennedy Center Honors because of Trump.
According to The New York Times:
Some recipients of the award, which honors lifetime careers in art, music, dance, film, television and culture, had already said they would not attend a gala event at the White House held in conjunction with the presentation. The Kennedy Center said that the gala had been canceled.
This isn't new. The news of people not going to the Kennedy Center Honors had been known for a while, and got worse after Trump's defense of nazis in Charlottesville. But Trump never cancelled his attendance to the event until now, probably realizing he would be utterly rejected by being there.
Which means Trump is finally realizing he's toxic, but he's unwilling to issue an apology. He's just not attending an event where an apology would be pertinent.
